I was born June 6, 1939 in Manhattan, Kansas to Edith Lindenberg Umscheid and Sylvester C. Umscheid, Sr. I was raised on our dairy farm at 6405 Flush Rd., St George, Kansas. I went to a one room school at Elm Slough just south of our house for first grade then to Flush (St. Joseph's)elementary and high school. I received a BS degree from Kansas State University, an MS degree from the University of Maryland and a PhD from Cornell University. I married Mattie Kaiser from Grainfield, Kansas and we have three grown children and six grandchildren. I retired in 2002 after working forty years with the Cooperative Extension Service 4-H programs at four different Universities. We now live in Wake Forest, North Carolina.
