Born in Marion County, he was a son of the late Joseph Samuel and Reba Lane Tanner. Mr. Tanner was a member of First Southern Methodist Church, Woodmen of the World and the Mission to Men Singers. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and was retired from Domestic Loan Co.
Surviving are his wife of Sumter; one son, William Joseph "Joey" Tanner and wife, Janet, of Sumter; two daughters, Deborah Denise Tanner Antley and husband, Barry, of Graniteville and Elizabeth Anne Kelien and husband, Greg, of Summerton; two brothers, John Preston Tanner of Socastee and Harold Franklin Tanner of Marion; one sister, Betty Jean Tanner Gentry of Manning; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at First Southern Methodist Church with the Rev. Ellison Evans officiating, assisted by Mr. Tanner's grandson, the Rev. Jason Antley.
Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
