Sarah M. Brown was the daughter of Joshua Brown and Sarah Pratt, who were first cousins, sharing the same grandparents, Daniel Pratt and Lydia Cobb.

After her father's early death 1827, her mother remarried, William Hutchens. Following her mother's death 1858, Sarah Brown continued to live with her stepfather in the 1860 and 1870 US Censuses. One mystery is that Sarah Brown had a daughter, Jennie Brown in 1853, apparently out of wedlock. Father unknown. (Jennie's death record states mother's maiden name as Sarah Brown, father unknown.)

However Sarah Brown did marry in 1877 at age 51 to James Tefft Hay. (Hay's second marriage.) This was a short lived marriage as James Hay died in 1879. And by the 1880 US Census, Sarah is living with her daughter's family. It apparently was not a happy marriage as Sarah's son-in-law Robert Macklin, took Hay to court to request support for Sarah's clothing and expenses. Additionally, Hay did not include Sarah in his will.

Also buried in the same cemetery, are her mother Sarah Pratt Brown Hutchen, and her siblings William Brown, born 1814 and Luther Brown, born 1820.

Writer is Sarah's 2nd Great Granddaughter.
