----
Canary Islanders History:

Spain wanted families to populate the province of Texas to prevent the French from encroaching on Spanish territory.

Some inhabitants of the Canary Island, located off the coast of Africa, voyaged over 5500 miles of ocean to Cuba and on to Veracruz Mexico. Then they trekked over 700 miles from Veracruz through Cuatitlan, through San Luis Potosí and Saltillo, Mexico north to what is now San Antonio Texas.

Arriving on March 9, 1731 they joined a military and civilian community that had been in existence since 1718 helping make the city of San Antonio a civil settlement in the province of Tejas .

The party had increased by marriages on the way to fifteen families, and four unmarried men constituted a sixteenth "family," making a total of fifty-six persons.

After arrival at San Antonio the king of Spain, Philip V, conferred upon them the titles of nobility of Hijos Dalgos or "Hidalgos" and each family head could use the term "Don" before his name, denoting his title.
