Born in Fairhaven, son of the late John and the late Sadie (Griffin) Dean, he was appointed a patrolman in the Fall River Police Department in 1947, named a detective in 1951, promoted to lieutenant in 1956 and commended for alertness and efficiency in the line of duty March 14, 1966. He was granted three months of leave of absence to accept, on a trial basis, a position as an investigator with the Massachusetts Public Defenders Committee.
In April of 1968, he was transferred to the Police department's Vice and Intelligence Unit, assigned to the criminal investigation division. He attended a two-week course at Northeastern University on accident investigation.
He worked on various murder investigations and was commended in April of 1960 for extraordinary police work in connection with one of those probes. After retiring in September of 1975, he served as a court officer with the Bristol County Sheriff's Department in the transportation division.
He was a World War II and Korean naval veteran, past member of the board of directors of St. Anne's Fraternity, member of the Tiverton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 539, and the Fall River and Massachusetts Police Relief associations.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Michael C. Dean of this city; two brothers, Joseph W. Dean of Westport and James D. Dean of Annandale, Va.; a sister retired U.S. Army Major Kathleen M. Dean of Washington, D.C., several nieces and nephews.
