Virginia Obituaries - Winchester, VA
Dec 8th - Meredith Capper, one of the oldest citizens of Winchester and for many years a prominent business man, died at an early hour this morning at his home here. He was eight-five years of age and a native of Frederick County since 1874. Mr. Capper had made his home in Winchester. He leaves one daughter and five sons.

Four cards comprise his military file at the National Archives: Meredith was a private in Co. G, 31st Regt. Virginia militia. He enlisted July 4, 1861, at Winchester, under Capt. Smith.

"Capon Valley, Its Pioneers and Their Descendants 1698-1940", Vol. II by Maud Pugh, p. 164 and "Spaid Genealogy 1922" by Abraham Secrest, pp 98-99, say that he hired a substitute in the Civil War because of ill health.

"History of Virginia 1924, Vol. IV, Virginia Biography", pp 411-412 says that he was considered more useful as a farmer so was exempt from service.
