Mary's father was, according to the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage Book, Andrew Lawton.

Miss Mary Lawton Buried Funeral Services Held in Congressional Cemetery Chapel


Funeral services for Miss Mary Lawton, whose body was brought here from New York city last night, were held this afternoon in the chapel in Congressional cemetery. Bishop Harding officiated. Miss Lawton died in New York city Tuesday. Her home for many years was at 1730 Massachusetts avenue.

Mrs. Lawton was the daughter of Mrs. A.A. Cole and the granddaughter of Hortio King, Postmaster General in the Buchanan cabinet. She was a writer of plays and some of them were produced privately in Washington. She was a great traveler and had a number of acquaintances in Europe, a notable one being the director of the Theater Francaise in Paris. She was a graceful conversationalist and popular in the diplomatic corps.

Miss Lawton was an only child.
