Ruby Mae Ralston was born October 4, 1879 in McDowell, Highland County, Virginia, the eldest of four children known to have been born to John Henry S. Ralston and Sarah Patience Hamilton. Her parents moved the family to Pocahontas County, West Virginia in the early 1880's..

There on June 2, 1897 Ruby married Leslie Osborne Beard. Twelve children are attributed to their union. Ruby's husband preceded her in death on November 7, 1931 at the age of 57.

A resident of Durbin, Pocahontas County, West Virginia, Ruby died in neighboring Elkins, Randolph County on June 29, 1949 at the age of 69.
