More than 300 firemen, policemen, sheriff's deputies and prison guards attended separate funeral held yesterday for two Philadelphia firefighters killed in the Tuesday night holocaust that destroyed a South Philadelphia ink manufacturing plant. The firemens' bodies were borne in flag-draped coffins on two fire department pump trucks. It was the first time department vehicles had been used as hearses for firemen killed in the line of duty. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated for John W. Welsh, 32, of 2632 S. Bouvier st. at 10 A.M. at St. Monica's Roman Catholic Church, 18th and Ritner sts. Mass of the Resurrection for Robert Malley, 37, of 2104 S. Frazier st. was held at noon at Most Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, 56th st. and Chester ave.
Rizzo Attended Funerals
The Police and Firemen's Band played as processions filed in and out of the churches. Both men were buried at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Broomall. Mayor Rizzo, Fire Commissioner Joseph R. Rizzo and Police Commissioner Joseph F. O'Neill attended both funerals. Following the Mass for Welsh, the mayor said, "I feel sorry for their families; they both left young children. These are good men, they put their lives on the lines every day." Contingents of firemen from Boston, Mass. (Malley's home), New York, Newark, N.J., Wilmington, Baltimore, Harrisburg and Scranton attended the funerals. More than 800 mourners crowded into St. Monica's for Welsh's services, while about 100 neighbors stood along the tree-lined street beneath overcast skies. Some 1,300 people attended Malley's funeral as another 150 onlookers stood on 56th st. watching the procession despite an intermittent drizzle.
Widow Weeps
His widow, Margaret, wept as she put her arms around her three sons, Robert Jr., 11, Michael, 10, and Kenneth, 9. Malley was a 14-year veteran of the force, carrying an outstanding rating with two citations for bravery. He was chosen Employee of the Year in 1968. Surviving are his wife, Mary C., and three sons, John, 9, Michael, 7, and Thomas L. Welsh was with the Fire Department eight years and had a superior rating. He was commended in a unit citation in 1971. The pallbearers were members of the men's respective companies, some of whom had been injured in the eight-alarm fire that destroyed the Frederick Levey Co., 1223 Washington ave. Thirty-eight firemen, a policeman and a woman were injured in the blaze. Malley and Welsh were buried chunks of masonry. Commissioner Rizzo estimated the damage at $1 million."
