He emigrated from Nova Scotia to Apalachicola, Florida with his parents between 1840 and 1850 and was a clerk on a steam boat. He served as a Confederate soldier in Co. A, Milton Light Artillery, in Florida enlisting as 1st. Sergeant on 10 March 1862. In 1880 he moved the family to Macon and was a clerk for the Central of Georgia railroad.
