Sources re city of birth conflict. Some say born in Glasgow, Barren Co., KY. He was son of John Gorin (d. Mar 1861) & his wife Eliza Frances Wilson (1783-1875).

As a boy young Jim was lost for 39 hours in Mammoth Cave, then the property of his uncle, Franklin Gorin. He was finally found by Franklin Gorin's cave guide, a slave who subsequently down through the years led many celebrities through cave. It was in the search for Jim that many of that cave's subterranean vaults were seen for the first time.

James W. Gorin was an attorney, an 1842 graduate of the University of Louisville. He was a devout Christian, a Presbyterian, and sided with the Union in the War Between the States serving as the Provost Marshall of Glasgow, Ky.
After the war, from 1865 to 1867 he served in the Ky. Legislature representing Barren Co.
