JENNIE SGRO MARTORANO

Jennie Sgro Martorano, 97, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2012. Jennie was born in Frankfort, New York on June 7, 1915 to Cesaro and Dominica Russo Sgro.

She was one of eight sisters including a twin sister, Ann. Jennie was raised and graduated high school in upstate New York. She and Michael Richard Martorano married in 1936. In 1939, their son Richard was born. Like many of the young wives and mothers during the war years while Michael was in the Navy, Jennie worked in defense plants in Utica and Dodgeville, New York. After Michael was discharged in 1943, Jennie and Michael spent their New York years in the hotel and restaurant business with properties in Bouckville, Earlville and New Hartford, New York.

In 1946 the Martorano family moved to Hollywood, California to let Richard continue his studies in music at a higher level. During that time in Hollywood, Mike and Jennie owned and operated "family style" Italian restaurants and drug stores with the old-fashioned lunch and soda fountains. In 1958, Jennie and Michael moved to Ormond Beach where many of her family resided and because of her commercial food experience, Jennie worked as a student lunchroom manager for Volusia County School System. She managed the Ortona Elementary School and Holly Hill Middle School cafeterias for eighteen years before retiring.

Over the years throughout her retirement, Jennie was continually recognized with much affection by the students, teachers and administrators with whom she worked. Jennie is an exemplary model of the "The Greatest Generation" as described in the book by Tom Brokaw. As a woman of the Great Depression and World War II, Jennie was a loving, supportive wife to her husband Michael in all of his explorations and adventures, a loving and encouraging mother to her son Richard (Rick) in his musical and academic studies and a devoted sister to her seven siblings. Jennie has always been full of life with family and community activities. She is a past officer and member of TOPS, St. Brendan's Catholic Church, and an officer in the Association of Retired Volusia County Lunchroom Managers. Jennie has four generations of nieces and nephews. Her Christmas cookies, baked bread and Italian pasta dishes will be missed by many.

She is survived by her 101 year-old sister Florence; son Richard and daughter-in-law, Ann of New Smyrna Beach and granddaughter, Leah of Oldsmar, Florida.

Friends may call 3-3:30 p.m. Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, 548 N. Nova Rd., Ormond Beach. A graveside service will follow at Volusia Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.
