Alarik Jacob Bakk, 93 formerly of Cook, passed away on Monday October 22, 2012 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay. He was born on October 3, 1919 in Cook the son of Jacob and Hannah (Barthel) Bakk.

He grew up in the Cook area and attended the Cook School. After graduation he served from 1942 to 1945 in the Army Air Force in WW II as a flight engineer. After serving his country he met and was united in marriage to Willanetta "Willie" Bierwirth on November 5, 1947 in Soudan. After marriage, the couple settled in Cook where they were longtime residents. Alarik was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cook. He was a commercial fisherman in Alaska for over 30 years. Alarik was a county surveyor and supervisor for Field Township. Alarik and his wife Willie were very active in community affairs. He was a tireless, longtime, much awarded volunteer for the following: North East office of Ombudsman-advocate for nursing home patients, Lutheran Social Services-Volunteer Guardians, St. Louis Co. Social Service –Volunteer driver, and Arrowhead RSVP Program. Alarik and Willie started a Medical Equipment Loan Closet in 1993, which is now part of the Cook Area Health Services. In 1995 they received the Northland Volunteer Council's Hall of Fame Individual Award for their many years of Volunteer services. In 1997, the city of Cook named Nov. 5th Willie and Alarik Bakk Day in their honor.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Willie; an infant daughter Darling Joy Bakk; son-in-law Richard Stusse; brothers: Arthur, Gunnar, Ralph, and Clarence; sisters: Alice Midura, Myrtle Davidson, and Agnes and Inez Bakk in infancy

Alarik is survived by his son Jack (Betty) Bakk; daughters: Michele Stusse and Lora (Robert) Bennett; brother, Melvin (Audrey) Bakk; 7 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
