Leland Rolla Anderson passed away peacefully while waiting for breakfast on Oct. 18, 2012. He was a resident of Riderwood Assisted Living in Calverton, Md. for the last seven years.

He lived in Odenton and then Crofton, Md. from 1959 to 2005.

He was born Feb. 7, 1923, in Ellsworth, Ill. He moved to Bradfordsville, at the age of 12, where he lived for a year in a log cabin on a knob outside of town with no way to get to school until the family moved into town the following year. He left Bradfordsville to join the Army in 1941.

He served in the 5th Armored Division during World War II and retired from the Army after 20 years, having achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer (W-2). He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his many years of dedicated service. He then spent 17 years working at the National Security Agency, finally retiring in 1978. His favorite job was as an ROTC Instructor at a high school in Indianapolis during his Army service.

Leland married Lois Welburn Wilson of Bradfordsville on July 24, 1943. They were together 68 years until Lois' death in 2011. Their commitment to and love for each other was an inspiration to all who knew them. Leland and Lois played golf together for many years, mainly at the Fort Meade golf courses. They enjoyed reunions of the 5th Armored Division held annually in various cities around the county.

Anderson was a faithful member of Nichols Bethel United Methodist Church in Odenton, Md. for 46 years. He served as assistant treasurer and treasurer of the church and was on the administrative board. He was a kind man and a gentleman in the truest sense of the word.
