Gillett Dies; Former School City Attorney

Gerald A. Gillett, prominent Hammond lawyer for many years and former city and school attorney, died early today at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, Dyer. He was 69.

He had served as Hammond city attorney under the Republican administrations for former mayors A. E. Tinkham and Charles Schonert.

For many years he served as attorney for the Hammond School Board, until being hospitalized about three years ago.

Close associates described him as "one of the most able attorneys in northern Indiana."

His death at about 1 a.m. today, was caused by uremic poisoning. He suffered a fracture of his hop joint in a fall at the hospital about two weeks ago. The break was healing satisfactorily, it was learned, he lost the use of his kidneys Sunday morning.

He left no close surviving relatives. His wife, Margaret L., preceded him in death in 1938.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Neidow Funeral Home, 117 Rimbach St., Hammond, the Rev. Paul J. Schmid officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Hammond. The body may be viewed at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Tuesday.
