Mrs. Virginia Swayze Caruthers Died Sunday Morning

After a long illness Mrs. Virginia Swayze Caruthers, age 84, died at the home of Mrs. J. F. Powell on Madison street Sunday morning at 2:20 o'clock. Mrs. Caruthers was born in Wilkerson county and came to Yazoo in her childhood with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Swayze, who were among the pioneers of this section, making their home in the eastern part of this county.

She was educated under the supervision of the standards set up under the old Southern customs, and, modest and refined, she easily absorbed the training which was given her and developed into a beautiful and charming woman.

She was happily married in early life to the late Dr. Caruthers, who died several years ago. Since that time she has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Powell, who were untiring in their efforts to make her last days comfortable and full of pleasure.

The body was taken to Midway Sunday afternoon, where it was laid to rest in the family lot. Many of the older citizens of this section paid their last tribute of respect with flowers and their presence. Rev. George H. Thompson, pastor of the Methodist church of Yazoo City, assisted by Rev. W. J. Caldwell, pastor of the Presbyterian church of this city, officiated at the services, paying a fitting tribute to her life. Funeral arrangements were in care of the Stricklin Funeral Home.

Mrs. Caruthers is survived by many relatives, the nearest of whom is H. Y. Caruthers of Greenwood, who was with her at the end.
