Mr. T H Pope Buried Monday
Mr. Thomas Henry Pope, one of Houston's most highly esteemed citizens, died Saturday afternoon, following an operation in a Memphis hospital. Mr. Pope had been in failing health since an attack of flu some time ago. Complications developed later and for several weeks little hope was held out for his recovery. An operation was advised as an only possible chance, but the shock was too much.
Mr. Pope was born in Monroe county, seventy-one years ago, and resided there a number of years. For ever thirty years, however he had made his home here, where he enjoyed the respect of all who knew him. He held the position of town marshal for four terms. When a youth he united with the Baptist Church, and for a number of years had been a deacon in the Baptist Church of Houston, where his funeral was held Monday morning, with Rev. W C Stewart officiating. His body was laid to rest in the Prospect cemetery, in Monroe county, by the side of his wife, who preceded him only a short time. He leaves one son, Dr. Andrew Pope, of St. Louis, and six daughters, Mrs. Andrew Gregory, of Okolona, Mrs. I G Gilliland of Hominy, Okla., Mrs. Clara Willmouth of Memphis, Mrs. W A Finn, of Pontotoc, Mrs. A L Dickerson, of Blaine, and Miss Cullie Pope, of Houston; one brother, Dr. A J Pope, of LeFeria, Texas, and one sister, Miss Fannie Pope, of Egypt.
