W. E. was found dead by his wife in the couple's barn lot that adjoins their home, just one mile south of Carbondale. He had complained to his wife on Monday of chest pains, after which he went to the barn to "unload bricks." He didn't come back to the house for lunch, and his wife went looking for him. When she found him, he had apparently died of a heart attack. A doctor indicated to Mrs. Arnold that her husband had been dead for about one hour by the time she found him.

He was an assistant supervisor for Carbondale township and an elder in the First Presbyterian church of Carbondale. He was also a member of the Community high school board for six years prior to his death.

Survivors included his widow, Elizabeth Arnold; the couple's daughter, Marian Ruth of the home; their sons: Clarence Arnold of Flint, Michigan; Ralph Arnold of Carbondale; Clyde of Vincennes, Indiana; and George of Booneville, Missouri.

Also surviving are W. E.'s siblings:
• Alvin Arnold of Columbus, Ohio
• Gale Arnold of Toledo, Ohio
• Mrs. Ida Hansrger of Roodhouse, Illinois
• Mrs. Harry Winder of Columbus, Ohio
