George Edwin Day, 90, of Cupertino, California, passed away on Friday, Sept. 21, 2012 in Cupertino, Calif.
A reception in remembrance of him will be held at the American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter (2731 North First Street, San Jose, CA, 95134) on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m.
George was born in Viking, Alberta, Canada to Arthur and Gladys Day on July 20, 1922. He graduated from Sweetwater High School in Chula Vista, Calif. He went on to earn a degree in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. After college he went to naval midshipman's school in New York and then served onboard the USS Wadleigh for the Navy from 1944 until 1946. Following that he worked as a chemical engineer, refinery manager and public affairs manager for Standard Oil/Chevron for 40 years in California and Alaska.
He enjoyed hiking, sailing, reading, photography, woodworking, clock making and his family. While serving as a member of the Kenai Chamber of Commerce he was responsible for relocating "Moose Meat John's" cabin in Kenai which is now the office of the Kenai Chamber of Commerce. He also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and the American Red Cross in California.
George is survived by his sister (Margaret Marston), three children (Marty Day, Chris Tucker, Larry Day), eight grandchildren (Elizabeth Marmorstein, Amanda Tipping, Meghan Day, Ben Tucker, Dan Tucker, Faith Tucker, Caroline Smith, Stephen Day) and six great-grandchildren (Abby Marmorstein, Rick Marmorstein, Caspian Marmorstein, Klarisza Smith, Harlan Smith, Myrrah Smith). He is preceded in death by his wife Coralyn Day, his sister Diane Mead, and his parents Gladys and Arthur Day.
