Earl was the son of Silas and Lilla (Powers) Whitaker. He spent most of his life in New Salem. He was a graduate of the New Salem Academy, 1911. For 24 years he operated the mail route from Cooleyville to Orange via North Prescott and Millington. From 1927 to 1935, and again fr0m 1937-38 he served on the Board of Selectmen. He married Clara Wright on August 15, 1914. She was a 1913 graduate of the New Salem Academy and an accomplished musician and singer in the area. She died unexpectedly in November, 1929.

As the Quabbin Reservoir began to fill and its many villages began their break-up, he bought a dairy farm in Winchendon, MA and moved there in 1938. He married Dorothy Robinson, a school teacher from North Brookfield in September 1943. They had one son:
