Son of John Walter and Nancy Coleman Carter. Entered the Civil War on 23 September 1861, Nashville, Tennessee. He was transferred to the Company D, 26th Infantry, Camp Nelson, Kentucky where he was Private from 23 January 1864 to 20 February 1864. He was absent from service as he was sick at Washington, D.C. His son, Will, told about him hearing his father saying his hair froze to the ground while he slept several times during the war. He married Rebecca Jane Coleman on 3 March 1864 in Ohio County, Kentucky. He was 5'8", gray eyes, light complexion and had sandy hair.
