Talmage Atkinson
Talmage "Tom" Daniel Atkinson, 87, Topeka, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at a Topeka retirement community.
Mr. Atkinson was a theater projectionist for 25 years. He was a service manager for Steve Smith Camera Inc., and he worked in audio installation in public schools. He also operated an electroplating shop and a clock repair shop. He served three weeks in the Merchant Marines before enlisting in the Seabees. He served three years in the Pacific Asian Theatre during World War II.
He was born Jan. 5, 1912, in Los Angeles, the son of Talmage Daniel and Annie Fisk Paine Atkinson. He moved with his mother to Topeka in 1913, and he was raised in his grandparents' home, John L. and Ada M. Paine. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1930, and he attended Washburn University. He learned the watchmaking trade while he worked with his grandfather in the Paine Brothers Jewelry Store in Topeka.
Mr. Atkinson was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Breakfast Club Sunday school class at the church.
He married Ruth Pennington in 1938. She preceded him in death in June 1980. He married Chloe E. Anderson on April 25, 1981. She survives.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Klasse Chapel at First United Methodist Church. Cremation will follow the services. Inurnment at Mount Hope Cemetery will be private. Mr. Atkinson will lie in state after noon Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel where relatives and friends will meet from 4 to 6 p.m.
