Amon S. Root was a soldier in the War of 1812 in Connecticut. He married Amy Lewis at the Southington Congregational Church in 1819. He and Amy had a daughter, Martha Elvira Root who married Stephen Burrows. He came to Whitewater, Wisconsin from the East - probably Connecticut - prior to 1870.

According to census records, Amon's wife, Amy, probably did not reside in Wisconsin. It is thought that Amy possibly died in Massachusetts or Connecticut, and Amon moved to Wisconsin sometime after her death to Whitewater, Wisconsin to live with their daughter, Martha and her husband Steven Burrows.
