Eliza Jane (also known as Dahlia) was the second eldest child of Archibald Mossman Ballard and Matilda (True) who were married in Springfield, Illinois, on 30 Jun 1838. Her family went to California in April of 1850 and settled in Amador county where Eliza married Laughlin "Louis" McLaine (1830-1889) who was a native of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He had previously been married to Caroline Richards, who passed away in 1863 at the age of 23.

Eliza and Louis were married on October 10, 1864. Their first daughter Cora "Madge" was born on November 4, 1866.  Daughter Caroline was born May 25, 1869, and when she was just 10 months old, Eliza perished.  She died on April 19, 1870, of marasmus (malnutrition) at the age of 28 years, 5 months, and 12 days leaving two young daughters.

In 1870 Louis and the girls were living in the household of Peter & Katherina Griesbach. Eliza Jane's youngest sister, Lucy Ballard (1854-1943), then fifteen, was also living there and was no doubt the caretaker of her young nieces.  This arrangement may have lasted a couple of years until both Lucy and Laughlin married.  Lucy married John W. Powers in August of 1872, just a few months after Laughlin had married Sarah Ives.
