A business, civic and fraternal leader in Hammond for 45 years, Joseph J Ruff died last evening in his home at 52 Carroll St. after suffering a heart attack. He was 80 years old.
Ruff retired in May 1941, after operating hardware stores at 3 locations here since 1896, when he came to the city.
Built Ruff Building
He was born in Tremont, Pa June 17 1862 and married Marcia E Lafferty Dec. 25 1895 near Maple Park, DeKalb Co., Illinois
After a year of partnership with Henry Lundt, Ruff purchased the hardware business at State & Hohman avenue and in 1914 established the large Ruff building at Hohman ave. and Muenich court, which was damaged by fire in 1922 and rebuilt. Although the hardware business was liquidated in 1941, Ruff retained ownership of the commercial building.
He was a member of the Kiwanis and Elk clubs and the chamber of commerce....
Funeral Saturday
In addition to his wife, Ruff is survived by 2 sons, Jos. Ruff jr., Hammond and Tremont Ruff, Niles, Mich., 3 daughters, Mrs Edward Higgins, Scarsdale, NY, Mrs Vernon Rea, Wayzata, Minn., and Mrs Carl Lewis Hampshire, Ill; a bro. Gus Ruff Hammond, a sister Mrs James Foley Philadelphia, Pa and 8 grandchildren.....Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. The Ruff Lamp shop at 514 State St. will be closed all day Fri., the family of the deceased announced.
