He was the son of Charles Worthington and Elizabeth Booth Worthington.
On June 26, 1839 as William M. Worthington, he married Alice Brown at Richmond County, Virginia.
They were the parents of one son, William Nicholas Worthington.

He served as a colonel in the Mexican War. He was the owner of the Brentwood Estate, which he requested should be sold at his death to pay debts to his sister, Catharine Pearson.
