Former Palmyran Dies in Clarence.
Edward O'Neill, retired agent of the Burlington railroad and former resident of Palmyra, died at his home in Clarence, last Sunday, May 5, 1940, following a month's serious illness. He would have observed his 71st birthday yesterday.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Patrick's Catholic church, conducted by the Rev. John Kenny, a former pastor, assisted by the Rev. P.P. O'Rourke of Macon and the Rev. John Gallagher of Clarence, pastor of St. Patrick's. Interment was mad in the Catholic cemetery at Brookfield.
One of Clarence's most popular citizens, he was agent of the Burlington there for 29 years from January 29, 1904, until March 4, 1933, when he retired after fifty years of service with the railroad. His career in Clarence was the longest period of any agent who ever served the railroad in that city. Prior to locating in Clarence, he was agent here for ten years starting in 1894. He had many friends in Palmyra.
A son of the late William and Sophia Mitchell O'Neill, he was born at St. Catherine, Mo., on May 7, 1869.
A member of a devoted family of railroaders, Mr. O'Neill follower in the footsteps of this father and five older brothers and entered the service of the Burlington in St. Catherine.
That service which began on March 4, 1882, when he was a boy of 13 Years, continued for fifty years, until March 4, 1933, when he retired amid the praise of Burlington officials and men with whom he had worked.
His life span encompassed some of the greatest days of the Burlington and he took pride in the railroad and his work for it.
Only one of his brothers, Michael M. O'Neill, formerly connected with The American Telephone and Telegraph Company in St. Louis, now retired, is still living.
Surviving Mr. O'Neill also are his wife, Mrs. Mary O'Neill; three daughters, Mrs. Clifford Blackburn of Maywood, Ill.: Mrs. E. W. Brennan of Clarence; Mrs. Emmerson Flagg, of Concordia, Kans.: one son Edward O'Neill, of Hannibal, and six grandchildren, Bobby, Clifford, Jr., Edward and Virginia Brennan, and Richard O'Neill Flagg.
Four brothers, William, Thomas, Patrick, and John O'Neill preceded him in death and one sister died in infancy.
Mr. O'Neill was a devout member of St. Patrick's Catholic church at Clarence and a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 2241, at Shelbina. He was a past grand night of the council.
Possessing jovial Irish wit and sparkling good humor, his cheerful personality won friends for him easily and they remained his friends through his life.
