Due to the national depression of the late 1850s Benjamin struggled to support his wife and family and ended up managing some of his father-in-laws property in Amherst County while his wife remained in Charlottesville. After his death his wife, with assistance from her father, opened a boarding house in Charlottesville for university students which she operated until her death. All the family fortune was lost.

Gravesite Details
The Winn family were originally buried on John's plantation (Belmont) but were moved when the plantation was subdivided in the 1890s.
