Joyce Reid Ingalls was born in Yonkers, NY, daughter of Everett P. and Imogen (Wormwood) Ingalls of Westbrook, ME. Joyce was a 1947 graduate of Wellesley College. In 1951 in Westbrook, ME she married John Oliver Markward, who worked in management at the S.D.Warren Paper Co. in Westbrook where her father was the Mill Manager.They had two children born in Wayland, MA.

When John was transferred to manage Scott Paper International's division in Belgium, the family resided there for four years where their children received further education. Joyce wrote many diaries about their travels throughout Europe while they were there, along with entertaining Scott Paper officials and its European business partners in their home.

John died suddenly from an illness at their summer home on Sebago Lake, ME. After his death, Joyce moved to Addison, TX, near some of the Markward family, where she resided the rest of her life.
