The seventh of nine children born to Samuel John Carson and Nancy T. (Queen) Carson in Haywood county of North Carolina on 24 Feb 1836.
On 17 Feb 1861, he enlisted and became a member of the Texas Mounted Rangers.
He married Samantha Smith in Washington County, Texas on 7 Jan 1868. She died in 1870 childbirth complications. He remarried to (maybe cousin of Samantha?) Martha Ann Smith on 12 Jun 1881. Their children:
