Hal grew up in Napa, CA but spent much of his free time at "the ranch" of his great grandparents Ira Delmer 'I.D.' and Eunice Flora 'Smith' Wood on Brittian Lane in Santa Rosa, CA.
Hal first married Patricia Dukes of Napa and together with her
had 2 children, Steven V. Jack and Mary Catherine Jack Conklin. He later married Marilyn Ann Kamp and they adopted Candice 'Candy' Michele Jack and had Janice 'Jannie' Marie Jack.
He learned to fly airplanes at a young age and it remained a life-long passion.
Hal was the owner of Ajax Distributing Company of Santa Rosa which was a wholesale beer (Burgermeister, Schlitz) and wine distribution company.
His final flight occurred on his way back to Santa Rosa from Reno by way of Truckee, CA. He, along with Candy and Jannie and his good friend Robert Jacobson and his daughter Brita took off at 4:30 pm after staying longer skiing than they had planned. It is thought the plane had trouble with the wings icing as Hal requested a lower altitude several times from the Air Traffic Controllers. He was lost from radar around 5pm and it took 2 days before the Civil Air Patrol and the Sheriff's department found the crash site. All had perished.
Hal, Candy, and Janice are buried together in a single coffin.
Their funeral was held at St. Rose Catholic Church in Santa Rosa.
