Died at 81 years 11 months. He went by name of Doctor and that may have been his legal name. He lists his name as Doctor Thorn on marriage record at time of his marriage to Mary Pierce. He was called by the name of "Doc" because he pulled teeth and bled people with certain ailments, as was the custom in that day. He settled in the Three Fork region, which was later named Thornton, after him. He was well to do and owned a gristmill and sawmill combination and a sugar camp. At one time he owned all the land in the Thornton area. Doc and Susannah were among the original members of the Union Methodist Church. Doc remarried after the death of Susannah to Mary Pierce, who was much younger than him. In the 1870 Grafton, West Virginia census he is listed as Doctor Thorn. On his death certificate, with information provided by daughter Lucy, it gives his occupation as miller. In the 1850 census records is lists his occupation as tavern keeper. and of: Susannah Thorn
