John O. Amerlan, Sr. was born and confirmed as Oscar Joseph Amerlan, his discharge papers from WWI, he was listed as same, when he married he used John O. Amerlan. He was also known as Jack and nickname of "Ackie" or pronounced as "Ockie".

He enlisted in to the Army of United States August 16th 1917 in Chicago, Illinois for Illinois National Guard Organization in Federal Service. He told them he was 19 years old, but was only 16 yrs old, soon to be 17 yrs old. The army found out he was underage so his mother signed for him to go into the service.
Upon arrival in France the 33rd division took part in the attack on Hamel, Chipilly Ridge and Gressaire Wood, Meuse-Argonne battle, and St. Mihiel front.
John Amerlan Sr. was wounded and received the Purple Heart.
He remained in the service until honorable discharge March 27,1919 at Camp Grant, Illinois, U.S.A..
He was a Private in Company L, 132nd Infantry Regiment, 66th Infantry Brigade, 33rd Division "Prairie Division"(Illinois National Guard).
