Charley Bowman Found Dead

A most horrible crime was revealed when on last Wednesday, the 21st last, all that the buzzard had left of Charley Bowman was found in a thick wood near the mill of J. F. Mulford in District No. 3 of this county.

Bowman, who resided with his family at the camp of Denkmann Lumber Co., had been missing since Thursday previous and his remains were found only the most diligent search by people of the community. A coroner's jury was empaneled and after examining a number of witnesses returned a verdict that the deceased came to his death by external and violent means at the hands of some person or persons to the jury unknown.

Later, two young men of the community - Will and Dock Mullins - were arrested on warrant issued by the local J. P. and brought to jail. They will be given preliminary hearing tomorrow.

It is the most diabolical crime ever committed in this county, for which there appears to have been no sort of justification or excuse, and it to be hoped the mystery (for it seems to be one on the surface as existing at this time) will be thoroughly investigated. The good citizens of that portion of the county need to assert their manhood, and they should lend the officers every assistance within their power to fix the murder where it belongs.

21 August 1919 -- Circuit Court

Friday morning the work of getting a jury in the Will Mullins' case was begun. Mullins was charged with the murder of Charley Bowman near Mulford's mill on Tilton creek last August. It was a dastardly crime, the body being found nearly a week afterwards in the woods. After exhausting the special venire of 75 men and going thru the two regular jury panels, 12 talisman were summoned before the jury was finally accepted by both sides and locked up for the night. Saturday morning the taking of testimony began and concluded Monday evening of this week. The argument began Tuesday morning and consumed the greater portion of the day, the case being submitted to the jury about five o'clock. After being out about an hour, the jury brought in a verdict of "not guilty". It was a case of circumstantial evidence, but a pretty strong one if the witnesses for the state were to be relied upon. Both sides put up a hard fight, the state being represented by District Attorney Toxey Hall and County prosecuting Attorney Luther E. Grice, and the defense by Hons. Patterson & McGehee and G. Wood Magee. The case against Doc Mullins was not processed.
