Dan Ferguson of Billings passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at RiverStone Hospice Home in Billings after a lengthy illness with multiple myeloma and pancreatic cancer.
Dan Ferguson was a well-known professional youth worker, having worked for Boy Scouts of America for 42 years. Dan served Scout Councils in Amarillo, Texas; Dalhart, Texas; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Waterloo, Iowa; Denver; Joplin, Mo.; and the Montana Council headquartered in Great Falls, where he served as field director for the Yellowstone Valley and managed the Scout office from 1979 until his retirement in 1994. He was proud of the fact that he had served in every professional position that was then available and seven years as Scout executive, the top management position of a local Scout Council. Dan was a registered Scouter from 1938 to the current time.

He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1947 and attended Amarillo College before transferring to Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo. Dan was one of the first enrollees in the program of the American Humanics Foundation, developed to prepare young men and women to enter the field of nonprofit organization youth development work. He graduated in 1952 with a bachelor of arts in human relations. He has attended numerous schools, training conferences and regional and national meetings during his 42 years before retirement, serving as an instructor in many. Since retiring, Dan served in many volunteer positions and received the Silver Beaver Award from the Montana Council along with numerous other recognitions for his work in the Scouting Program.
Oscar Daniel Ferguson was the son of Jesse H. Ferguson, an engineer for the Santa Fe Railroad, who died in 1936, and Bertha "Bert" G. Lowe Ferguson, a well-known teacher in the Amarillo Public Schools, who died in 1948.
Dan Ferguson was married to Amelia Louise Brink of Marshall, Mo., on Sept. 13, 1952, in the First Methodist Church of Marshall. Both were graduates of Missouri Valley College, Marshall, Mo. Dan and Lou celebrated their 60th anniversary on Sept. 13, 2012.
Dan Ferguson is survived by his wife, Lou Ferguson; a daughter, Carol Louise Kinzel of Billings; three granddaughters, Susan, Julia and Allison Bullock; a nephew, Robert Fields of Texas; and a niece, Janet Brown of Texas.
Preceding him in death was his sister, Susan Stuart Ferguson Fields of Amarillo, Texas.
Dan had three loves: his wife, Lou, and family; the Scouting Program and what it could do for youth; and the out-of-doors, particularly Philmont Scout Ranch at Cimarron, N.M., where he spent six summers living and working in the high country.
Arrangements for the funeral and cremation are with Smith Funeral Chapel and a memorial service will be held at First English Lutheran Church, 1243 N. 31st St., Billings at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, with a reception to follow at the church.
