Richard Harmon Magleby 1929 ~ 2012

Richard Harmon Magleby, 83, passed away at his home in American Fork on October 10, 2012, of natural causes incident to age.

He was born June 7, 1929, in Provo, Utah to Dorothy Harmon and Reed William Magleby. He spent his early childhood in Monroe, Utah, and later lived in Salt Lake, Tremonton, and Preston, Idaho.

He played football for Brigham Young University and graduated from Utah State University. He served an LDS Mission to New Zealand and was a veteran of the US Army.

He married Colleen Alder in the Logan LDS Temple May 23, 1952. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of twelve children.

He taught LDS Seminary and Institute in Utah and Arizona for 36 years. He enjoyed photography, gardening, saving money, and hosting spectacular family reunions.

He was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in many leadership positions, including ten years as Stake Patriarch.

He is survived by his wife Colleen, American Fork; sister Sally Buttle, Atlanta, GA; his twelve children: Kirk (Shannon), American Fork; Dixie Lyman (Paul), Richfield; Dorothy Titera (Bill), Westlake, OH; Michael (Ann), Orem; Alfred (Hiromi), Okinawa, Japan; Charles (Sue), Am. Fork; Bryant (Kellie) Am. Fork; David (Karen), Rexburg, ID; Mark (Kim) Gilbert, AZ; John (Mitzi), Taylorsville; Maria Squire (John), Grantsville and Melinda Topham (Mike), Winchester, VA; 44 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 11:00 am in the American Fork 39th Branch, 2433 West 450 South, Pleasant Grove. Family and friends may attend a viewing Monday evening from 6-8 pm at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove and at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the American Fork City Cemetery.

Richard Harmon (Dix) Magleby passed away peacefully on the evening of Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at his home in American Fork, Utah with his wife of 60 years, Colleen, at his side. He was 83. He died of natural causes incident to age. Richard was the son of Reed William Magleby and Dorothy Harmon and the grand-son of John Ephraim Magleby and Jennie Warnock. He spent the first 10 years of his life in Monroe, Sevier County, Utah. He moved to Salt Lake City after his father and mother divorced, then to Tremonton, Utah and later to Preston, Idaho where he met his wife, Colleen Alder. Richard played football for East High School, Bear River High School, and BYU. He served a mission to New Zealand. He and Colleen were married in the Logan Temple in 1952 just before Richard was inducted into the US Army. Following his cousin, Frank Magleby, he served his tour of duty in Salzburg, Austria where his wife joined him. Their first child, Kirk, was born in Salzburg in 1953. 7 more sons and 4 daughters were eventually born to the couple. Richard considered the characters of his 12 children [Kirk Alder, Dixie (Lyman), Dorothy (Titera), Michael Alan, Alfred Reed, Charles Dean, Bryant Richard, David James, Mark Valdean, John Paul, Maria (Squire), Melinda (Topham)] his finest accomplishment. He graduated from Utah State and taught LDS Seminary and Institute in Utah and Arizona. He served as a Stake Patriarch for 10 years, as had his grand-father John Ephraim Magleby and his great-grand-father Hans Olsen Magleby before him. Richard and Colleen served a senior CES mission in Logan, Utah. They have over 100 living descendants. 3 of their sons are currently serving as LDS Bishops in Idaho, Utah and Arizona, and a son-in-law is a Stake President in Ohio. Their children and grand children have served dozens of missions, with 3 in the field at this time. Richard's only sibling, Sally Buttle, is currently living in the Atlanta, Georgia area.
