David Hall is the son of Jonathan Hall, Sr. (1770) and Joanna Barton (1774) who were married November 6, 1792. They with her brother,Joshua Barton, Elihue Jones and their families came from Norfolk County, Virginia directly, or via North Carolina to Tennessee in the early 1800's. The families chose settlements on separate creeks. Joshua Barton picked Stones River, Elihu Jones on Carson's Creek, and Jonathan Hall at Cripple Creek.

Johathan Hall had come to Tennessee from Virginia prior to 1807 as shown by deeds in the County Court Clerk's " Records of Rutherford County :

His first wife was ????? and his first child, Franklin Donald Hall, was born in 1815 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee. His first wife died about 1816 and he returned to (the city of) Richmond, Virginia to marry on December 25, 1818, Maria Elizabeth "Betsy" Webb. They moved to Western Tennessee, Bedford Co., and had seven (7) children: Ferdinand Pedigo Hall, Fleming "Flem" Webb Hall, Martha Ann Hall, David Barton Hall, Jr., Preston Jobe Hall, Mary Hall, and William R. Hall. They lived at Henry Bowling's place; later called the J. P. Baldridge place
