CHARLES A. COLE, SPOKANE PIONEER, DIES SUDDENLY

Leaving his bed at 3 'clock this morning to get drink of water Charles A. Cole, pioneer resident of Spokane, ex-sheriff and United States collector of Internal revenue, dropped dead to the floor of his home, 707 Nora avenue. A stroke of Apoplexy caused his demise.

Mr. Cole has been ailing for about two weeks during which time he has not left his home. He has at no time been bedridden and when he retired Sunday night he was apparently in his usual health. His wife and daughter. Mrs. E. A. Borden, heard him fall and before he could be carried to his bed his life had expired.

Mr. Cole was born in New York state. He came to Spokane 27 years ago and engaged in the real estate business. Later he became a deputy in the county sheriff's office. After serving two terms in this capacity he was elected sheriff in 1900 for one term. He was succeeded by W. J. Doust, now chief of police.

Ten years ago Mr. Cole entered the government service and since that time has been continuously engaged as collector of internal revenue in 11 counties east of the Cascade mountains. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and the United Commercial Travelers.

Besides his wife and daughter, Mrs. Borden, he leaves a second daughter. Mrs. E. M. Campbell, of Whitefish, Mont.: two sons, Charles Allen Cole, of the Holley-Mason hardware company, and a son, Ralph. attending public school. A sister, Mrs. Robert Benzinger, resides at 9102 Gardner avenue.

The funeral will be held from the home under the direction of the W. 0. W. lodge. The date has not been set.

He was the son of Charles and Eliza (Murray) Cole.
