Naomi Carolyn (Hartley) RICHEY (1917-1998)

* On her mother's side, Naomi is a direct descendant of:
1.) Charlemagne (c.742-814), "The Father of Europe"
2.) King of England, William I (c.1028-1087), "William the Conqueror"

* father: Pennsylvania National Guard, Top Sergeant, Victor Aloysious "Vic" HARTLEY, Sr. (1890-1943) is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. In 1903, Vic's mother fills-out and signs a "Certificate of Parent or Guardian" form allowing Vic to join the workforce. This form claims that Vic was born in 1889 and that he is thirteen years old. However, every other document lists 1890 as Vic's year-of-birth, so it is possible that they lied so that young Vic could work. In 1914, Vic (24) works as a foreman and marries Caroline Josephine "Callie" (MacAtee) HARTLEY (23); they have six children. serves six years in the Pennsylvania National Guard to the rank of Top Sergeant in Artillery. In 1917, Vic (27) travels to El Paso, Texas, to apprehend a deserter. For most of his life, Vic works as a boilermaker in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and in Baltimore, Maryland. Their 1920 Baltimore residence (611 North Hayward Avenue) may be near the Pimlico Race Track. Vic's list of job titles includes: 12-year-old pretending to be a 13-year-old; Corporal of Company C, 2nd Infantry Regiment, National Guard of Pennsylvania; foreman; boilermaker; Top Sergeant of Battery D, 2nd Regiment of Field Artillery, Pennsylvania National Guard; "farm and boilermaker"; Licensed Maritime Ship Inspector; engineer; "brasswkr"; Superintendent of boilermakers; and something involving sheet metal.

* mother: Caroline Josephine "Callie" (Macatee) HARTLEY (1891-1977) is the youngest of eleven siblings. Callie has six children of her own. Callie becomes a nurse -- I believe after all of her children are born. Callie lives to be eighty-six years old and a great grandmother. After Callie's passing, among her belongings are thirty-seven prayer cards collected from the funerals of her family and friends as well as one hand-written poem titled "Since Then." The poem speaks of living after one's love passes-away, which does match Callie's early loss of Vic, but I am not certain that it is in her handwriting.

* Vic & Callie have six children:
1.) Victor Aloysious HARTLEY, Jr. (1915-2005) is a sheet metal worker and marries Sophie Dolores (Florek) HARTLEY (1918-2000); they have four children.
2.) Naomi Carolyn (Hartley) RICHEY (1917-1998) marries William Alfred "Bill" RICHEY, Sr. (1913-1977); they have six children. Bill becomes a Quality Assurance Expert at the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia.
3.) Ruth Marie (Hartley) COMPTON (1920-2000) marries Sgt. James Davis COMPTON, Sr. (1916-1981); they have four children.
4.) Pvt. Bernard Frederick HARTLEY (1921-1997) marries Ann (Haslan) HARTLEY (unknown-unknown); they have one daughter.
5.) Robert Clement HARTLEY, Sr. (1927-2010) marries Margaret E. (Paul) HARTLEY (1930-1998); they have six children.
6.) Henry Jarrett "Jack" HARTLEY, Sr. (1930-2002) is a machinist and marries Betty Lou (Ingraham) HARTLEY (1934-1997); they have two children.

* Naomi is born at home, at 6:00 A.M., December 22, 1917, at 2311 East Fletcher Street, Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA, weighing seven pounds and five ounces. Naomi's name may come from her 2nd great grandmother Naomi S. (Greenfield) HARTLEY (1814-1892). After marrying, Naomi has a daughter of her own born on December 23rd, and Naomi raises her daughter to think that December 23rd is both of their birthdays. The daughter does not learn of Naomi's true December 22nd birthday until after Naomi dies.

* April 4, 1940; Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA
Naomi (22) works as a secretary in the laundry industry for 52 weeks in 1939 earning $700, but has been out-of-work the last three months. The 1940 Federal Census is the only record that lists an occupation for Naomi.

* April 19, 1941; Saint Madeleine Sophie Roman Catholic Church, 6440 Greene Street, Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA
Naomi (23) marries William Alfred "Bill" RICHEY, Sr. (28). Bill becomes a Quality Assurance Expert at the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia.

* Bill & Naomi have six children:
1.) Sgt. William Alfred "Bill" RICHEY, Jr. (1942-2004) never marries.

2.) wife, Naomi Carolyn (Hartley) RICHEY (1917-1998)
3.) son, Sgt. William Alfred "Bill" RICHEY, Jr. (1942-2004)
4.) daughter, Joanne Naomi "Jody" RICHEY (1946-2007)

* I knew Naomi as my grandmother. She was the perfectly stereotypical, sweet, loving grandmother. My mother still seems a little in denial about Naomi's real birthday being December 22nd. My mother says she's not sure if Naomi ever knew how to drive a car.
