Alex "Al" F. Wack, 89 years old, of Elyria, Ohio died on Tuesday May 6, 2009 at his home following a lingering illness. Mr. Wack was born on July 6, 1919 in Helmetta, New Jersey and made his home in Elyria for 87 years.

He was a United States Army veteran of WWII serving with the First Infantry Division, known as the Big Red One. He was wounded in combat during the Tunisian Campaign in North Africa. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, Four Battle Medal Stars, the European-African Theatre of Operations Medal and Bar, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, and the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Wack was employed as a chemical and metals analyst at Abex in Elyria for 37 years, retiring in 1980.

He was a past Commander of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 49 and was recognized as the longest standing member of the local chapter. He was a member of the Order of the Purple Heart, the American Legion Post 12, the VFW Post 1079, and the United Polish Club in both Elyria and Lorain. He was also a past officer and board member of Little League South where he was active for many years. Mr. Wack was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and the church's Holy Name Society until the closing of the church this year. He is now a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

He entertained at various local nursing homes using his harmonica at sing-a-longs for many years. He enjoyed traveling, singing, playing cards and checkers, and watching his grandchildren participate in sports.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers; and one sister.

Friends will be received at Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland Street, Elyria, Ohio 44035 on Friday, May 8, 2009 from 4–8 P.M. Closing prayers will be on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 9:30 A.M. in the funeral home. A mass will follow at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary Church, 320 Middle Avenue, Elyria, Ohio with the Reverend Father Charles Diedrick Pastor officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by VFW Post 1079 will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria, Ohio.
