OBITUARY
Solomon Syrus Delong was born April 20, 1871, in Floyd County Virginia. He was the son of Calvin Delong who died in the year 1879. The wife and mother departed this life in 1898. (?)
To Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Delong were born twelve sons and two daughters and of this large family there are but two living. Mrs. Margaret Hilton Lives in Topeka, Kansas and Robert Jackson lives in Council Grove, Kansas.
Solomon Syrus Delong was married to Mary E. Rees, August 15, 1899. One son, Luther and a daughter, Pearl, were born to this union. The family lived about twelve miles north of Council Grove, where the husband and father worked for Mr. Will Young who pays the following tribute to the memory of of a faithful employee: "In my four short years as his employer, he has been the most faithful, prompt, dependable and the hardest working man I have known. He was always early to work and the days were never too long. He was economical, upright and honest. He always worked to the interest of the other fellow. His faithfulness to his employer and the splendid work he did will always be remembered and the vacancy caused by his death will be hard to fill. He had wonderful ability in many lines. He was devoted to his neighbors, was obliging and courteous to all."
Dr. Delong was taken ill very suddenly on the evening of December 11th, while doing the chores on the farm and lived but a few minutes. He had lived 51 years, 7 months and 21 days. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, his children, one brother and one sister besides a host of friends.
Funeral services were conducted in the Christian Church by the pastor, B. N. Sypolt. A quartet composed of Mrs. Will Stone, Mr. Zimmerman, Mrs. A. M. Nelson and E. M. Jones with Mrs. V. S. Coltrane at the piano furnishing appropriate music. The body of Mr. Delong rests in Greenwood Cemetery.
