Colleen W. Camp, a member of the Gulfport City Council for eight years and a vice mayor for two terms in the 1990s, has died at 75. Mrs. Camp, who did not seek re-election in 1998, died Monday (Nov. 17, 2003) at Northside Hospital and Heart Institute. When she made her first bid for public office in Gulfport in 1990, she pointed to her experience as a single parent and business owner. "The experience that I have gathered over the 48 years I've lived in this community and the love I have for Gulfport are great qualifications for serving on the Gulfport City Council," she said. In her campaign for re-election in 1996, she asked voters to consider her work on the new City Hall, the city's library expansion, sidewalk upgrades and Clam Bayou Nature Park, commonly known as Osgood Point. Mrs. Camp, who was vice mayor in 1992-93 and 1996-97, also served on the City Charter Update Committee and the Board of Adjustments. She was a volunteer supporter of the Gulfport Historical Museum. Born in Oneco, she came here as a girl and graduated from St. Petersburg High School. For many years, she owned Colleen's Produce Market and was a real estate agent for Doss Realty. She was an avid traveler and an Atlanta Braves fan. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Gulfport. Survivors include two sons, Jim Perry, Gulfport, and Kenny Perry, Palmetto; a daughter, Nancy McGettrick, St. Petersburg; a brother, Floyd Wilson, Floral City; her companion, Roy Thompson; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Gulfport Memorial Funeral Home, 5601 Gulfport Blvd. S. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Catherine A. Hickman Theater, 5501 27th Ave. S, with burial at Woodlawn Memory Gardens in St. Petersburg.
