John was the son of Joseph Arnold and Hannah Gifford of North Kingstown and Exeter, Rhode Island. He was married about 1774 to Ruth Hall, and lived with his family in Halfmoon, Saratoga Co., NY. He appears there on the 1790, 1800, and 1810 federal censuses, and his widow Ruth appears there in 1820. Children:

* Hannah, b. 1775, d. Chenango, NY 30 Nov 1809, m. Joseph CROSS (1769-1819)

* Mary, m. Samuel TEACHOUT. They sold their land in Clifton Park on 22 June 1827 and moved to New Rochelle in Westchester Co., NY. A Samuel Teachout, 1773-1847, is buried in the Liverpool Cemetery, Liverpool, Onondaga Co., NY. A Mary Teachout is also buried there, but the dates on her marker are illegible. Her dates of 1777-1839 were found at an undocumented website. This is likely the correct couple, but more research is needed. Mary is named in her father's will.

* Joseph, b. 9 Jan 1780, m. Mary ALTHOUSE. He is named in his father's will.

* a daughter, m. John KETCHAM, called Mrs. John Ketcham in her father's will.

* a daughter, m. James McCOURTIE, son of John McCourtie of Halfmoon who died 1814. A James McCourtie is buried in this cemetery, but his wife is Amy Wait. Did he perhaps first marry a daughter of John and Ruth Arnold? She is called Mrs. James McCourtie in her father's will.

* Ruth, b. 3 July 1786, d. 1862, m. Daniel HARRIS, b. 1780, d. 19 April 1862. She is not named in her father's will.

* William Peleg, b. at Half-moon 27 August 1790, died in Garden Prairie Illinois, and married 22 Feb 1810 Elizabeth _______, born 29 March 1797 (material on this child kindly provided by Adam Austin Arnold, based on a family Bible record).

* Benajah Douglas, b. 6 Feb 1798, m. Martha M. WALLACE. He is named in his father's will
