Donald "Alfie" E. Dunn, 83, of Galesburg passed away at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at Rosewood Care Center.
He was born on June 19, 1929, in LaHarpe, Ill., the son of J. Clinton and Helen R. Johnson Dunn. He married Marjorie A. Bixenman on April 10, 1955, in Ft. Madison, Iowa. She survives of Galesburg.
Also surviving are two sons, Daniel E. Dunn of Brimfield, and Steven C. (Ruth) Dunn of LaCrosse, Wisc.; one daughte, Donna M. (Kenny) Naslund of Altona; seven grandchildren, Dustin (Jen) Dunn, Sean Dunn, Eric Dunn, Kendra (David) Peterson, Brian Naslund, Sara Naslund, Erin Naslund; two great grandchildren, Machaelle Moore and Zander Peterson. Also surviving is one sister, Lil Anders of LaHarpe. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Betty White, one brother Dale Dunn, two brothers-in-laws, and one sister-in-law all of LaHarpe.
Don graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1948. He served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954 during the Korean conflict. While in the Navy he was on the naval boxing team where he won many awards. He owned and operated Don's Antenna Service for 20 years. He was a switchman for the CB&Q, then Burlington Northern Railroad from 1956 to 1984. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Galesburg, Illinois. He was a member of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 and the VFW. He was a mason and a shriner, riding his scooter in many parades. He was on the development committee that started the first railroad days in Galesburg.
He is past president of Prairie Hub Club, he helped coach boxing to youth in the Galesburg Youth Athletic Club and coached women's softball team.
Don and Marge loved to dance. The first time they met was on the dance floor. They danced their entire marriage winning several disco competitions in the 1970s. Don loved to tell jokes to everyone he met and he never met a stranger.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at the Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2012, at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes & Crematory in Knoxville, with Masonic Services at 7:30 p.m. conducted by Alpha Lodge 155 AF & AM of Galesburg. Intombment will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island with military rites conducted by the Moline American Legion Post 246 of Moline. In-lieu of flowers, ,emorials may be made to the Gordon Behrents Senior Center of Knox County, Galesburg Youth Athletic Club or Compassus Hospice of Galesburg. Fellowship will follow the graveside services at noon at the Hurd-Hendricks Fellowship Center in Knoxville.
