Civil War Veteran - 37th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment Greybeard Regiment

Philo was the son of John Littlejohn and Katherine Fairbanks. He married Adaline Sadler on 01 MAY 1837 in Cattaraugus Co., NY. They were the parents of a young son (1841-1843), Leverett Junius (1845 Oregon, d 1865), and Almira.

Rev. Philo B. Littlejohn and his wife Adeline (Sadler) decided to travel west to open a mission but their [1839] start was so late they could not overtake the American Fur Company brigade traveling to the Fort Bonneville Rendezvous. They decided to spend the winter at Quincy, Illinois.

In 1839 left Quincy, Illinois with his wife en-route to Oregon, a journey of some 2500 miles, all of which was by horseback and pack train as a missionary, the principal work being among the Indians. They stayed in Oregon for 7 years.

1940 - Rev. Philo B. and Adeline Littlejohn and carpenter Alvin T. and Abigail Smith packed their baggage and supplies and departed on horseback following the trail from Fort Hall bound for Fort Boise -- July 22, 1840 they had two tents to sleep in and so were protected from severe weather. Ladies had side-saddles and easy-riding ponies and made the journey very comfortably. Mrs. Abigail Smith and Mrs. Adeline Littlejohn had horses that paced easily, but usually they traveled at a walk.

Rev. Philo B. Littlejohn; Adeline (Sadler) Littlejohn stayed with the Whitmans (they moved to the Willamette Valley, September [1841] and to Lapwai in [1842])

1842 - An incident occurred during which an Indian broke into the family home of Rev. Philo Littlejohn and took the Congregational minister's valuables.

OREGON TRAIL TIMELINE -
1841 - the Littlejohns also had a baby in mid-May.
1843 - The Littlejohns' only son drowned in the mill-race at Lapwaii in the summer of 1843.

In 1845 he returned to Wisconsin and New York, and later was a farmer around Delhi, IA. He was a member of the famous "Graybeard" regiment in the Civil war.
