He married Clara Krauter on October 29, 1924 at Primrose, Iowa.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Pauline Olson of Delevan, Illinois; three sons, Richard Lay, Henry Lay and Edwin Lay all of Delevan, Illinois; and a brother John W. Lay Jr. of Tremont, Illinois; along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A sister preceded him in death.
He retired from farming in 1964 and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.
