David Munro/ Monroe Tyrrell was the last husband of Emily Amanda Rockwell.

Sometime in Spring of 1849, according to a great grandson of Lysander Gee and Marietta Rowe (She was the 1st wife of Hiram Gates/Second wife of Gee , Dr. Laurence Gee ), the a fore named 31 year old Hiram Gates, and 16 year old Emily Amanda Rockwell left Salt Lake City for the California gold fields. Further testified by members of the Gee family: "there was a warrant issued for Gates' arrest for kidnapping." (If that claim is true, this researcher wonders why Sheriff Orrin Porter Rockwell wasn't on him, like a monkey on a cupcake!) Many accounts claim the truthfulness of an arrest warrant & Orrin Porter Rockwell made a trip to California at this time; if Orin fulfilled the warrant about the time Gates was found dead, the cause of death was never discovered or reported. Gates was alone, found dead on a river bank. Emily collected Gates' estate, estimated as worth "millions" in today's value, as his widow.

The family lore contends that the runaway couple had married in California (no document has been found). Further it is related in family histories that Hiram Gates later became the founder of the town of Greenwood and died there, along the American River, the following September 5th, 1850. Hiram Gates.

The lore is that Miss Rockwell, or Mrs. Gates, which ever you choose to believe, became a gold rich widow at age 17. Court documents reveal she claimed his estate as Gates' widow. She is listed on the Greenwood Valley, El Dorado County 1850 US Census as Emily Gates. Gates' sons, Thomas and Solomon, were residing with them and were later reported killed by Indians shortly thereafter, but that lore is also false.

Thomas lived to age 63, married and was superintendent of an Arizona prison when he committed suicide because of ill health, and Solomon lived to the ripe old age of 86. History surely is a "matter of opinion" in some cases!

Next it is recorded that Rockwell/Gates married Henry Willard Brizzee about 1851 in Sacramento County (no document has been found); however, a Divorce Decree for Emily from Brizzee was issued 26 December 1856, after the births of two sons.

About 3 weeks later, she wed William Andrew Woolsey 18 January 1857 in Alameda County. They had a son and daughter by 1860.

Finally, 10 September 1865, she married David Munro/Monroe Tyrrell 10 September 1865 at Donner Lake, Nevada County, California. This marriage lasted until his death in 1897. He did die in Salt Lake St. Mark Hospital....some records show 21 of April, with burial in Box Elder County on the 25th. Local lore supports this, but another record claims he was buried in Salt Lake.

Emily Amanda died as Emily Tyrrell, but is memorialized as Emily "Rockwell". After 32 years of marriage to her husband, David, some individual has chosen to place a modern stone with an incorrect surname! (EMILY may also be buried on her ranch, and is now "turning over in her grave"). Her death certificate reports she died at her ranch in Box Elder County.

UPDATE: Emily Amanda Rockwell Tyrrell's other 2 husbands have been found in Salt Lake City, Mesa Arizona, and Hiram Gates died in Greenwood, El Dorado, California.

He married Emily Amanda Rockwell Woolsey 10 September 1865 at Donner Lake, Nevada County, California.

She had been in California after being with Hiram Gates and then was married to Henry Willard Brizzee for several years, giving birth to Charles Porter and Henry Willard Jr. She stayed in California with husband, William Andrew Woolsey, whom she also later divorced. Emily Amanda had two children by Woolsey: William Richard Woolsey and a daughter, Lucy "Lulu" Belle.

All her children remained with her and were raised by David Tyrrell. In fact, William R. used the name Tyrrell (or Tyrell) and all his descendants took the surname of Tyrrell. "Lulu" was also known as Tyrell/Tyrrell.

David Tyrrell was Emily Amanda Rockwell's last husband; they had no children of their own.

2015 UPDATE:

Added Information from R WOOD was copied from the Deseret Evening News on the Utah digital Newspaper site. The date is 4/21/1897.

"David Monroe Tyrell a veteran miner and one who worked on the Comstock Lode, Nevada, in 1862, died at St. Mark's hospital last evening, at the age of 69 years. Of recent years Mr. Tyrell managed The Christy Mine at Silver Reef."

Since this was published on the 21st - he could not have died on the 24th as recorded in Salt Lake City; hence it is believed the Salt Lake Record was made long after the fact of his death and subject to question.

At this date, 2015, the conclusion is that the "Tyrrell Cabin Burial" is that of David Munro/Monroe Tyrrell. Local records indicate he was living at the Ranch at this time, but was probably taken to St. Mark's Hospital because of the seriousness of his illness.

Local legend is that Emily brought him home to their ranch with never an intention of returning to Salt Lake.
