Obituary:

John J. Adams, 92 of Mauston passed away Tuesday, July 31 at Crest View Home New Lisbon, where he was a resident the past eight months due to deteriorating health conditions. The son of Isabelle (Frater) and John Henry Adams was born July 2, 1915 in Greenwood, Arkansas. The Adams family moved from Arkansas to Fremont, Ohio when John was eight years old. He is a graduate of Fremont Ross High School. He was united in marriage to Dolores Lilley May 2, 1936 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Fremont, Ohio. To this union a son, Kenneth John was born. John was a supervisor at S. E. Hyman in Fremont for many years, until the couple moved to Milwaukee. He was later employed for the U.S. Postal Service. In May of 2006 the couple was honored at a surprise 70th anniversary party at Terrace Heights, Mauston where they resided. John was an avid sports fan. At the age of 17 he signed a professional baseball contract with the Cincinnati Reds organization. At 21 years he was forced to leave his beloved baseball due to health reasons. He loved golf (winning the Milwaukee Open - Senior Amateur Division in 1968), coached youth baseball, played in the dart leagues at the churches where he belonged, bowled for many years and watched all sports on TV. He was on the church council at St. John's for many years. Another favorite pastime was spending time with his family. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, New Lisbon. Survivors include his wife, Dolores of Mauston; son, Kenneth (Marcia) of New Lisbon; three granddaughters: Tamara (Les) Steffeck of Suring, Christy McGuire of New Lisbon, and Andrea (Craig) Smith of Pewaukee; six great-grandchildren: Joshua Steffeck, Alicia, Jordan, and Morgan McGuire and Mitchell and Maxwell Smith; nieces and nephews: Isabelle Hilt, Dick (Sally) Adams, Jim Adams, of Fremont, Ohio, Jack Adams, Florida, Fay (Henry) Latham of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, Susan Sheffer of North Royalton, Ohio, Judy (David) Dejanovich of Willis, Michigan, Anne (Jim) Mickey of Woodville, Ohio, distant cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jim and Harry, and two sisters, Eloise (Mrs. Lester) Berger and Mary Ann (Mrs. Kenneth) Sheffer, and an infant grandson, Mark Kenneth Adams. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 4 at 11 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church with Pastor Wendy Ruetten presiding. Burial will be in the New Lisbon City Cemetery. The visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Bethany Lutheran Church or their favorite charity. The Hare Funeral Home in New Lisbon assisted the family with services.
