Their aircraft crashed and caught fire 3 miles west of Grimsthorpe at 1249hrs after failing to recover from steep dive from 8000 feet during an air-test sortie.

WO 1 James Anderson Clark , F/Sgt Walter Henry Pickering , Sgt Ronald Alfred Kinnee , P/O John Arthur Hay, F/Sgt Edmund Murray Harney , Sgt George Watson Wilson (ground staff mechanic) , LAC Walter Robert Albert Jahnke (ground staff) , LAC Edward Douglas Lawley (ground staff, on leave when killed) and LAC Leo Owen Luten (ground staff, on leave when killed) all perished in this incident.

Killed Sep 15/42 age 25 #419 Moose Squadron (Moosa Aswayita) Wellington Aircraft # X 3796 was on a two hour oil consumption test when it suddenly went into a 45 degree dive and then crashed at Thursby, nine miles east of Stamford, Lancashire , England.
Son of Robert J. Hay and Loretta Hay, of Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada; Husband of Edith M. Hay, of Chatham.
