Melvin served in the US Navy during World War II. All of his military papers, including his official discharge papers were lost after his death in Chico, Butte Co., California. It's possible his papers were sold at a yard sale or estate sale. Only one picture of Melvin in his Navy uniform still exists because it was one that was taken with his brother Gene who was serving in the Merchant Marines.
